Shoppers are requested not to use plastic bags in Abu Dhabi

Plastic-Bag-FreeThis weekend is going to be celebrated as an eco-friendly day in Abu Dhabi. Near about 25,000 eco-friendly shopping bags will be distributed through participating houses at shopping malls and 39 supermarkets in the city. This will be starting from Thursday and will continue till Saturday as stated by Emirates News Agency (WAM) quoting a report in "Gulf News".

There has been a campaign "Make UAE Plastic Bag Free" in Abu Dhabi. In this there will be no use of the non-biodegradable plastic bags at any of the 39 outlets of the five supermarkets during the "plastic bag-free weekend”, this declaration is done by government agencies.

The main aim of the government is to remove the use of plastic bags nationwide by the coming 2013.

Every year near about 11.6 billion plastic bags which are equal to 140,000 tonnes are being used in the country.

This campaign has been started by the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) and major supermarkets and malls on Tuesday. The Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) and the Centre for Waste Management-Abu Dhabi (CWM-A) were also present in this campaign.
