The Office for National Statistics has revealed that the cases of teenage conceptions have fell down by 6% in the last year.
The actual number of conceptions in the under 18 age group were 38,259 compared with 41,361 in 2008, which means a decline of 7.5%. About half of these conceptions led to abortions.
The stats have also revealed that the proportion of teenagers choosing to have abortions rather than go through with their pregnancies has elevated over the last ten years.
The teenage pregnancy rate was highest in Western Europe for many years which have now reduced. The downfall in the rate is a proof that Labor’s £280 million strategy to solve the problem is working. The program of 10 years duration ended last year.
Chief Executive of the Family Planning Association, Julie Bentley, says that “success brought about by today’s figures revealing we’re seeing the lowest teenage pregnancy in England and Wales for 30 years is down to a dedicated strategy in England with a tried and tested formula of sex and relationships education, contraception and information services and local services working together”.
