A shortfall of nurses has been seen in government hospitals. This shortfall is causing great inconvenience to the nurses working in such hospitals. They are required to handle numerous patients at the same time. During the shift a nurse does not even get adequate time for a lavatory.
As per the global standards, a nurse is only expected to attend 8-10 patients but this rule is never observed in most of the local hospitals. A single nurse is asked to handle a ward holding 40-50 patients. According to the authorities the reason for this is the budgetary constraint and the limitation of personnel hiring by the World-War II-era charters.
To provide help to the existing nurses the authorities have started accepting applications from newly registered nurses as volunteers. But there is a negative clause to this as well, not only that the volunteering nurse’s wont get a salary they would be required to pay a training fee. The volunteering nurses would have to pay a fee of 3,000 pesos for three months.
There are thousand of unemployed nurses who are willing to take the option of a volunteer nurse as they will at least gain bedside clinical knowledge and get a certificate of work experience.
With this new procedure the hospitals will be able to reduce its expenditure and make revenue from the fees paid by the volunteering nurses.
