The Health Protection Agency, HPA, that due to a toxin produced by bacteria associated with MRSA, there has been a 10-fold rise in reported cases of superbug.
After cases of Panton-Valentine Leukocidin, PVL, caused various deaths, the government reported these cases better than what it was being done before.
Boils, abscesses and like painful skin infections can be caused by the strain on layers that are present under the skin.
Data states that there has been a 10-fold rise in cases from 224 in 2005 to 2,227 in 2010, in the past six years.
The HPA feels that because of these cases being reported better, there has been a dip in these cases and vigilance has also improved. It was not being done before because many cases of PVL were unidentified infections.
Antibiotics are able to treat PVL but it can become difficult to control because it can become resistant to drugs.
Experts state that Staphylococcal boil and abscess spread more and is more aggressive. It is also seen that chances of the infection getting recurrent are there and it means that it needs treatment that is more effective.
According to Dr Angela Kearns, head of the Staphylococcal reference unit at the HPA, patients will get benefitted as the findings will lead to improved treatment.
