Flesh-eating bug victim gets admitted

NinewellsA woman with a potentially serious infection was admitted to the hospital as stated by a former Ninewells patient.

The woman admitted lives in the city and reports state that she is in her 60s.

Because of patient privacy, no details were doled out by NHS Tayside as they wanted to keep it to themselves.

Details of a patient admitted with necrotizing fasciitis was given by NHS Tayside to Health Protection Scotland but it did not give any further information on the patient admitted.

Necrotizing fasciitis is not a very common infection and is of a rare nature. It was seen that in 2010, across Scotland there were only two such cases and these cases were from Greater Glasgow Health Board and NHS Tayside.

Ninewells Hospital-based infectious diseases expert Professor Dilip Nathwani said, “Necrotizing fasciitis was an infection emergency and any patient suspected of having the infection would be admitted to hospital.”

He added that for treating the infection, the flesh is removed with surgery that is affected by the bug and this is done to keep the infection off.

Major surgeries may be needed to cure serious cases.
