The Chinese government is trying to restrict people from knowing about the unrest going on in the Egypt. The micro blogs have thus blocked the word “Egypt” for searching.
The Chinese twitter-like services operated by Sina gave no result to the Chinese word “Egypt”. The English word “Egypt” can still be searchable on the search engines.
The news of the anti-government protest in Egypt has made its way to the Chinese media outlets. The coverage is very limited and a very little is mentioned. The protestors have taken the streets and they want the end to the rule of President Mubarak. He has been ruling the country since 1981.
The Egyptian government has scrapped the internet facility in the response to the protestors. This has caused heavy damage to the protestors especially from organizing.
The Chinese government has done similar activities in the past. During 2009 riots, the government shut down the internet facility. The social networking websites are barred. Since then these social networking websites are blocked in the country. After almost 6 months, the government restored the internet services of the region.
The government blocks any politically sensitive documents from the websites routinely. China Internet Network Information Centre has claimed of 63 million-micro blog users.
