A study that was released stated that last year free man hours worth $700,000 were put in by Red Cross volunteers in Singapore. The study was released by the humanitarian organization.
There are about 7,000 volunteers that are working here and they all contributed about $100 and this would have been worth something if they got money for their work.
The economic value of services that was given by volunteers was analyzed by the 'Value of Volunteers' study for the first time. These services were not only rendered in Singapore but also across the world in the 186 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
Across the world there are 13.1 million volunteers who are working and they gave their services while handling disasters and everyday works like blood donation and these services were equivalent of about $7 billion.
Health services were provided by about 36 per cent and disasters were managed by about 27 per cent of volunteers.
Volunteers in Singapore play a very significant role in recruiting blood donors and providing first aid at various sports events.
All of this was stated by Tadateru Konoé, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who was here for the 21st International Association for Volunteer Effort, IAVE, international conference.
