Unborn baby undergoes surgery, survives

Unborn baby undergoes surgery, survivesA baby that doctors though will not survive an infection and will die while in womb was born and has survived too.

At 21 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus was hit with a killer virus.

Once the situation was detected, professor Kypros Nicolaides, who is well-known in his field, did an operation on baby Freddie Marvel’s heart before he was born.

Freddie’s mother Deanna’s another child had got an infection called slapped cheek and she too got it.

The symptoms of the infection are mild fever and redness on the cheek but Freddie had following the infection got a deadly build-up of fluid in his body and head. He was seen swollen up in a scan that was done in May.

Deanna and her husband were told by a Bedford Hospital midwife that not many chances of Freddie’s survival were there.

Laurence, Freddie’s father, was told that he should book a funeral. Deanna said, “They had basically written-off Freddie’s chances. I couldn’t bear the thought of him dying inside of me.”

Dr Stephen Burrell was then contacted by the couple for a second opinion. At Spire Hospital Deanne was awake without any painkillers and the unborn baby had to undergo a blood transfusion that was risky.

The swelling was controlled by Professor Nicolaides and the baby’s heart after getting ruptured under pressure was repaired. Last year on September 18, Freddie was born without complications.
