$3.4 B settlement to be faced by Glaxo

Glaxo-SmithKlineIt has been reported that due to its anti-diabetic drug called Avandia, a multi-district litigation amounting to an estimated $3.4 billion, will be faced by GlaxoSmithKline.

Reports also state that in different states of America, a number of pending litigations against Avandia have been filed. It is suppose to be an oral anti-diabetic agent which acts primarily by increasing insulin sensitivity.

Against the adverse effects of Avandia, according to the records of Federal court, more than 50,000 complaints have been reported.

With an average settlement of $460 million, about 10,000 cases against Avandia were settled by Glaxo last year.

For the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, On Monday, in the US District Court another lawsuit was heard. James Buford from there had died after taking the drug and the lawsuit was filed by his relatives. After a 15-month course of Avandia, Buford suffered a heart attack that proved fatal.

About 42 clinical studies state that the risk of myocardial ischemic attack was increased by the daily intake of the anti-diabetes drug.

On March 28 this year, a second trial against Avandia will start, according to reports.
