Tragic toddler death puts couple in tight spot

A court was recently told that a couple was worried about their child's condition and was looking for possibilities of euthanizing her shortly before the girl drowned in a backyard pool.

An inquest at Glebe Coroner's Court is investigating if the drowning of the child was a deliberate act or it was an accident.

The girl suffered from Rett syndrome and her parents actually ended up asking doctors if euthanasia was possible.

In 2007 December, in the inflatable pool, the girl was discovered face down after she was diagnosed with the syndrome.

Her parents were asking doctors to place her in foster care as the girl ultimately would have been severely disabled.

Counsel assisting the coroner, Sergeant Stephen Kelly, said, "It was possible the little girl had been immersed in water for up to 20 minutes. The inquest heard that although the mother was a swimming instructor, she did not perform CPR."

The coroner according to Sgt Kelly will have to figure out if the incident was an accident or otherwise as it is being doubted that the parents did not want their daughter to live any longer.
