Yesterday, there was yet another struggle held by Spanish government to impose a ban on smoking. And if it is put in place the way it has been designed then it is going be the harshest in Europe.
Not only public buildings, bars, restaurants and cafes but also outdoors near schools, hospitals and playgrounds will be areas where smoking is going to be prohibited.
Also, some prisons, mental hospitals and hotels are going to be provided with a separate room for smokers.
However, the difficulty comes because almost half of the Spaniards who smoke are women. One can understand the gravity from a recent example where during a recent wedding it was found almost every guest was smoking. The proud groom was giving Cuban cigars to his friends and family, who all winded them away.
Doctors are pleased with the law. Data has shown that in Spain, four out of 160 people, who are passive smokers, die because of tobacco-related diseases.
The first anti-smoking law was introduced four years back by the government. This was with respect to the workplace where the prohibitions are already effective. But the bars and restaurant have still been given the privileges to decide whether they want to impose the law or not.
