South Korea under the grip of foot-and-mouth diseaseConcerns about foot-and-mouth disease have increased following two cases of foot-and-mouth disease at separate livestock farms in South Korea.

A pig farm in Boryeong, 106 miles southwest of the South Korean capital of Seoul was tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease, according to the South Korea's farm ministry.

Following this incident, a nationwide quarantine was imposed. Sincethe weekend, reports state that it was the third such outbreak in the central province.

On a cattle farm in Chuncheon, east of Seoul, the second case was reported.

Destroying all 23,000 pigs and 72 heads of cattle has been ordered by the quarantine authorities. As a further safety measure, within a 1,600-foot radius of both farms Quarantine measures, including culling, also have been ordered.

Five provinces and a major South Korean port city called Incheon has come under the grip of the outbreak, which on November 29 was the first reported.

Vaccination for about 452,000 livestock and culling of 662,000 animals has been ordered by the authorities as a step to fight the disease by the federal government.

Human beings do not get affected by the highly contagious disease among livestock.
