There are reports that state the gender-based violence when it comes to HIV and AIDS in South Africa. There are several statistics that makes this picture clear and state that more women are prone to infection.
Thoko Mussa, Society for Women and AIDS in Malawi (SWAM) national coordinator, said that due to physical and emotional violence inflicted by husbands, women tend to be depressed and this depression becomes deeper when a women is HIV infected.
She said, "Women who are living with HIV and AIDS can easily develop immune system problems and can die early, physical violence is also one of the factors that contribute to the spread of HIV amongst women."
The case with Malawian women becomes even worse when they have to care for their husbands who become HIV positive.
Mussa added that regardless of the fact that a husband abuses his wife, a wife will always be there to care for the sick husband, which is not the same among men.
There has to be an effort made by national governments in collaboration with Community Based Organizations to decrease violence and bring down risk behaviors.
