In an era of increasing cases of HIV/AIDS among gay community, some experts are urging for giving authentication to same-sex marriage in Chicago in order to combat infection rate.
The HIV infection rate is 0.05% across the country and the figures are worse among gay men. So, some experts, ahead of World AIDS Day on Wednesday are calling to legalize same sex marriage, as around one out of every five men in gay community is HIV positive.
Zhang Beichuan, a professor at Qingdao University and outspoken gay rights advocate said, "To legalise same-sex marriage could help stabilize and sustain gay relationships, thereby lowering the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS".
The Government programs cater to 90,000 gay men a month, which was not enough, as expressed by Hao Yang, Deputy Director of the disease prevention and control bureau under the Ministry of Health.
As per data released by the Chicago Department of Public Health, there were 20,871 people in 2008 who were living with HIV and AIDS, which was 8,500 higher than figures of 1995.
Experts say that till the time same-sex marriage doesn't get legalized, the Government is reaching the vulnerable groups such as gay men and making them aware of safe sex and providing condoms to them.
