A contribution to the fight against breast cancer was made by General Electric in Rome to Floyd Healthcare Foundation that received a $50,000 donation.
The funds will be used for The Breast Center at Floyd to acquire additional world-class digital mammography capabilities.
The Breast Center in an attempt to ensure that they receive quality breast health education, diagnosis, annual care, treatment and support, for the women of Northwest Georgia brings nationally recognized best practice protocols.
In 2011, when it relocates to the comprehensive cancer center being built on the Floyd Medical Center campus, the Breast Center will expand its capabilities.
An annual mammogram or Clinical Breast Exam is not scheduled by 20,000 out of 46,000 women in northwest Georgia who are 40 and over. By spreading awareness, technologically advanced services and education, the Breast Center at Floyd seeks to lower the breast cancer mortality rate.
The anticipated patient volume was exceeded by the centre in its first year of operation and has reached its patient capacity.
In fiscal year 2009, either through the center or the Mobile Mammography initiative, the Breast Center at Floyd provided 10,278 mammograms to women. About 101 women were diagnosed of having the cancer out of all women tested.
