Lung disease will be tested by nurses

Lung diseaseThe Greater Western Area Health Service will be testing for chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which is the fifth biggest killer of Australians.

People will be helped in completing an online checklist to figure out if they are at a risk of getting the disease that leads to shortness of breath by clinical Nurse Consultants who will be at the Broken Hill Plaza.

Blood pressure will be tested and oxygen saturation checked of those who come to the stall and they will also be given some information pamphlets.

According to consultant, Denise McCallum, there is a possibility of people having the disease and still being unaware.

She stated, "They've actually said that COPD largely goes unrecognised and undiagnosed and that alarmingly least three out of four people with COPD don't even know they have the condition, so they don't take the important steps to manage their symptoms or stem the progress of the disease."

She also added that people can manage the disease but as of now the disease has no cure.

For managing the problem things like exercising, eating good diet, taking medication if needed and giving up smoking can be done.
