Update on Haitian national response strategy

Update on Haitian national response strategyTo discuss the most pressing needs on the ground and to coordinate actions for a more effective and efficient response, the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, hosted a meeting today of its major partners working on the cholera epidemic in Haiti.

Saving lives of Haiti survivors using treatments that are prompt and improving the living conditions so that cholera can be kept at bay is the top priority, according to PAHO Director Dr Mirta Roses.

Dr Roses said, "We really need action on potable water, safe food, education, and building a solid water and sanitation infrastructure in Haiti."

There were many organizations that had participated in the meeting like faith-based groups, government, private groups, that are supporting Haiti's response to cholera.

Importance of their support was noted by Dr Roses and she highlighted the importance of Haitian leadership.

"The capacity of NGOs is fundamental in assistance to the country. But national and local leaders must be in the driver's seat because they will remain after the crisis," Dr Roses added.

An update about various developments and Haitian national response strategy was given by PAHO's Dr Sylvain Aldighieri.
