In an effort to contain a deadly cholera outbreak, there has been a restriction in travel between Australia's Torres Strait Islands and neighboring Papua New Guinea.
It was announced by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Friday announced that Australia had restricted all cross-border travel under the Torres Strait Treaty free-movement provisions after speaking with PNG authorities.
A departmental spokesman said, "These restrictions prevent traditional visits to Australia by indigenous inhabitants. This restriction will remain in place until further notice, but will be subject to ongoing review."
A website that contains information on a cholera outbreak on the PNG island of Daru has been updated by the federal government and it also reflects the decision.
The website states, "The number of affected regions around PNG is expanding."
Following death of about 13 children from cholera, Queensland health officials are already monitoring cholera's spread in one of the closest PNG towns to Australia, Daru.
Severe illness is developed by about 10 per cent of people after getting cholera bu it usually only makes people mildly sick.
Travelers would need a valid passport and visa to cross as the department said the border between Australia and PNG otherwise remained open.
