South Korean electronics giant, Samsung has said that it aims to sell one million units of its recently launched Android powered Galaxy Tab computer tablet.
The high sale target is set even as the device has been lunched only in selected areas of Europe and south-east Asia in the middle of October. The company has also said that it will launch the device is different sizes to compete with rival Apple iPad.
iPad, which is responsible for opening up a new market segment in the PC industry, has sold about 4.19 million units in the Apple's most recent quarter. Apple has been dominating the global market with the device however, now observers say that the company is expected to loose share as competitors are increasing their market share. Other players including Research in Motion, Cisco, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard are also coming up with their own devices in the segment.
Earlier Apple chief executive Steve Jobs had criticised the seven-inch tablets and desbribed it "dead-on-arrival" as the screen is too small.
The Galaxy Tab powered by Google's Android Froyo 2.2 operating system, features a 7-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024x600 WSVGA pixels. The device is capable of full HD videos playback and also offers Readers Hub app for eBook features. The device features similar hardware found in the Galaxy S GT-i9000 touchscreen smartphone.
The tablet is powered by 1.0GHz Cortex A8 Humming Bird application CPU with PowerVR SGX540 GPU and has 512MB RAM. It will come in 16GB and 32GB versions and support expandable memory of upto 32GB through a memory card. The device has two cameras; a 1.3megapixel front camera and a 3 megapixel camera at the rear with auto focus.
It has quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks and tri-band 3G (HSUPA 5.76Mbps, HSDPA 7.2Mbps) networks along with support for Wi-Fi (802.11n) fro faster browsing and Bluetooth 3.0 for connecting to other devices. The company also offers interactive onscreen keyboard input app called Swype and ThinkFree Suite for MS Office Documents.
Samsung Galaxy Tab will be available on all major UK carriers. It will cost £599 on O2, £499 with a cheap £10 data deal on Vodafone while Orange will have an option of buying for £529 or £499 based on different plans. T-Mobile UK will offer the device for £529 with pay-as-you-go data plans starting at £2 per day and Three will charge prices in the range of £99 up to £500 depending upon the plan.
