A panel developed by the insurance council is cited to rule that domestic healthcare systems such as ayurveda , unani and siddha should be honored at the same level as of allopathy in terms of medical insurance, underlined a person known to the committee’s plans.

The proposal for the same was presented to council members in the form of a presentation.

The department of Ayush is reported to have asked the General Insurance Council for pondering over the proposal of accepting claims related to the non-allopathic means of treatment, he added.

It is claimed that a three-member committee has been formed by the General Insurance Council to look into the same. The committee involves chief executive officers from Star Health, Max Bupa and Apollo, the person revealed.

TA Ramalingam, head of underwriting, Bajaj Allianz General Life Insurance, posted, “But under the alternative means like homeopathy, we do not have enough data to cover them. For example, curing an ailment under homeopathy may take years; we would not have a structured way of looking at data. But under allopathic means of treatment, it’s more immediate, and hence, easily manageable”.

The team aims to analyze the pros and cons of the proposal prior to implementing it.
