Campaign led by brain tumor survivor

Campaign led by brain tumor survivorA new partnership between the Brain Tumor Alliance Australia and Beyond Blue, a government-funded organization that helps depression sufferers was launched by Tasmanian senator Catryna Bilyk who in 2008 was given the news that she had two brain tumors.

She then underwent a brain surgery only five days later and was told that her tumors were nothing to worry about as they were benign.

After two years a renewed parliamentary focus on brain tumors is being led by her.

Emotional and mental issues that are faced by those who suffer from tumors is what the partnership aims to tackle.

Senator Bilyk said at the launch at Parliament House in Canberra said, "Brain tumors commonly affect people's mental health. A diagnosis of cancer doesn't just affect the person diagnosed; it affects the family, caregiver and friends."

Senator Bilyk by establishing a brain tumor awareness group inside parliament was also trying to create more interest in the disease within parliament.

She added that mental health and issues relating to brain tumor were of extreme importance to her as she was a survivor of two brain tumors herself.
