138 dead in suspected cholera outbreak

cholera outbreakIt was stated by UN officials that in a severe outbreak of severe diarrhea nearly 140 people have died in central Haiti. But it is being suspected as cholera by Haitian health officials.

In the outbreak centered on the Lower Artibonite region, north of the capital Port-au-Prince, the U. N.'s humanitarian spokesperson in Haiti, Imogen Wall, said that the World Health Organization was informed by Haitian health authorities that 138 deaths have taken place and 1,526 cases have been reported.

Hundreds of sickened people are taking treatment in a crowded hospital and 135 people have been killed by an outbreak of severe diarrhea in rural central Haiti.

Though tests were awaited by many but health workers suspected the cause was cholera.

There were many patients seen lying in front of the hospital here on blankets. But rains happened and these people were carried inside the hospital by nurses.

In the deadliest outbreak of disease, doctors were testing for cholera, typhoid and other illnesses.

Catherine Huck, deputy country director for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said, “Haiti’s Health Ministry had recorded 135 deaths and more than 1,000 people infected.”
