Tobacco consumption, a growing problem

TobaccoTobacco consumption is a major problem in India as minors from 15 to 17 years of age are often exposed to tobacco, about 10 per cent of minors taking tobacco regularly despite a ban on tobacco by the government of India.

Global Adult Tobacco survey was released by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad and nearly 0.9 million deaths in India every year is caused by tobacco use. He also called for a jihad against the use of tobacco.

It was stated by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in India that in India about 29 per cent of people had exposure to second-hand smoke and about 50 per cent had it outside their homes.

Though the government has banned smoking in public but one can be seen often smoking at a public place. Within half an hour of waking up about 60 per cent people consumed tobacco.

Not only males but about more than 20 per cent of females were also consuming tobacco on a regular basis. People were exposed to tobacco mostly at a restaurant or public transport.

One would start using tobacco from the age of 17 but there have been cases where females start taking tobacco when they turn 15.
