Drinking during pregnancy should be avoided

Drinking-during-pregnancyIf you think that light drinking during pregnancy would not harm your baby then think again as experts say that mums-to-be should not raise a glass. An earlier research carried out in the UK had stated that there was no detrimental effect of light drinking during pregnancy.

More than 11,500 British children were tracked by the study and assessed the long-term health of these kids who were born at the start of the decade and no signs of anything harmful were found if moms had a alight amount of alcohol during pregnancy.

This finding has however been disapproved by an OZ research that says that abstinence from drinking was the safest way to a healthier baby.

Dr Lucy Burns, senior lecturer and chief investigator at the University of NSW's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre said, "The finding of the earlier research was that children exposed to light drinking in pregnancy had better cognitive ability at age five years in comparison to children of mothers who did not drink during pregnancy."

It was added that it was not all and no improvement in functioning of a children was found of moms who drank during pregnancy.

She added, "Given the increasing body of knowledge now showing that alcohol disrupts brain development in the foetus."
