A report has stated that in New Zealand about a quarter of kids get obese or overweight before they start going to school.
Health experts have accused the government of doing nothing to change the trend despite the number of these young obese children becoming scary.
A data by the Health Ministry stated that about 5.4 per cent of four-year-olds in the past two years who took part in the nationwide B4 School Check were obese and the overweight percentage was about 18.3.
Including 1200 from Canterbury, the number of overweight children was 13000.
Health Minister Tony Ryall said, “The Government was not going to label pre-schoolers who are a little overweight as a problem.”
For help with their weight, only 0.4 per cent of the most obese children were referred including 32 in Canterbury and 293 nationwide. Information on healthy activity and healthy eating was given to parents.
Fight the Obesity Epidemic spokeswoman Dr Robyn Toomath felt that it was scary to actually see the number of obsess kids.
She said, "The idea that the obesity epidemic is tailing off is a fantasy. Over our life people become heavier and heavier."
It was also stated that the government was not doing anything except overwhelming evidence about self-management, parental control and education programs failing to yield a positive change.
