Patel has no money for manslaughter appeal

Jayant PatelThere has been a delay in an appeal that was filed by former Bundaberg-based surgeon Jayant Patel against his manslaughter and grievous bodily harm convictions.

In July after he was convicted by a Supreme Court jury of three counts of manslaughter and one of grievous bodily harm, the 60-year-old former head of surgery at Bundaberg was jailed for seven years.

Patel was the director of surgery at Bundaberg Hospital and the convictions relate to that time.

In November by the Court of Appeal, Patel's appeal against his convictions was to be heard.

But it was informed to the court by Patel's legal team this morning that it can not go ahead because it does not have the money.

It has been stated that until New Year the appeal will not be heard and the November hearing has been delisted.

Next month again the matter will be mentioned and then it can be told by Patel’s lawyers whether the funding issue has been resolved or not.

For three counts of manslaughter and one of causing bodily harm, in June, Patel, 60, was convicted following which he was jailed for seven years.
