As anger grows about the loss of ‘respected’ practitioners, pressure for a review of new registration requirements for overseas doctors is growing.
Dr Rajendra Moodley has failed the medical tribunal interview because he was deemed to be unfamiliar with Australian social and cultural issues in Queensland, but a sense of relief prevailed after the South African-trained GP was given a reprieve and been allowed to return to the practice.
Patients of Dr Moodley at the Stellar Medical Lowood practice near Brisbane were happy that their GP was back to treat them again.
The national registration system after a UK-trained cardiologist was refused registration to work in Cairns has been asked to be reviewed by Nicola Roxon and Queensland’s health minister Paul Lucas has asked for the review.
He said, "I have a concern where a fellow of an eminent college from the UK is not actually granted recognition of that in Australia and has to go through extra testing as though they were from an obscure developing nation.”
A Senate inquiry into the medical registration system has been called for by the local MP Warren Entsch and Lucas said he agreed the system needed scrutinising.
