It has been stated by the mining giant Xstrata that legal action involving health-related lead concerns in Mount Isa in north-west Queensland has gone on for too long and now is the time that appropriate actions is needed through court.
Five families are suing the mining company, the Queensland Government and the local council over alleged lead contamination.
It has been alleged that children have suffered lead poisoning and brain damage from the contamination by the mining giant.
No new information has been found in the report according to the Member for Mount Isa, Betty Kiernan.
For families to deal with lead exposure in children there is public information available, Kiernan says.
Measures introduced to protect children from lead exposure are working, Kiernan, who is also the head of the city's Living with Lead Alliance, sstated.
She said, "There are thousands and thousands of children who have, and are still, being raised very successfully in Mount Isa and live safely within our community."
Steve de Kruijff, Xstrata's chief operating officer, stated that the matter needed court’s attention.
He stated that nothing was more important than a child’s health.
He added, "What we are saying here today is if there's any legal cases to answer to in relation to an individual's blood lead levels then we're prepared to answer them all in court.”
It was also stated that it has been long, about, two-and-half years of threatened court action from Slater and Gordon, and it was time that something was done.
