Childhood cancer survivors can get cancer again

Childhood cancer survivors can get cancer againA recent study has stated that there are chances of dying from cancer are higher among children who survive cancer and there are possibilities of dying early of other cause.

About 900 cancer survivors, who got treatment at the Sydney Children's Hospital, from 1972 to 1999, were included in the study.

The result stated that in childhood cancer survivors, the risk of cancer was five times higher as compared with the overall NSW population. There was a chance of dying that was seven and a half times more.

Linked to other radiation-based treatment, two-thirds of survivors will develop a related chronic health condition, according to lead researcher Dr Lesley Ashton of the Children's Cancer Institute.

Dr Ashton who is the head of the Molecular Epidemiology Program at the Children's Cancer Institute said, “Good follow up and health care for these patients is thus important.”

He further stated that the importance of being aware by cancer survivors about the risk factors and certain complications that might be due to treatments and second cancers is highlighted by our results.

It is also important to maintain good follow-up health care and attempts are on to look at how current therapies can be further improved.
