A new study has found that inflammation in obese mice was reduced when they were fed omega-3 fatty acids that can lead to diabetes.
In the United States one of the most popular dietary supplements are fish oil supplements that contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
Study co-author Saswata Talukdar, a post-doctoral fellow at University of California, San Diego, said that how exactly omega-3 fatty acids work has not been figured out and that is why omega-3 fatty acids are widely believed to be beneficial.
It was found out researchers that a particular receptor on cells, GPR120, was acted upon by omega-3 fatty acids and when they were activated, inflammatory processes were blocked.
Insulin resistance can take place by chronic inflammation, a precursor to diabetes.
Talukdar stated that, "if we can fix the inflammation part, it's possible that we could prevent insulin resistance or even ameliorate diabetes."
Fat tissues are thought to be beneficial as they help in clearing out the cellular debris and making body get rid of infections but fat tissues contain macrophages that can have a negative effect too.
