Google to transform e-mail with new “Calls from Gmail” service

Gmail serviceInternet major, Google has confirmed reports that it will roll out the new "Calls from Gmail" service, which allows users to call to any phone number straight from their inbox and speak through a microphone and a headset.

The new voice calling will only to available to the customers in the US and the users will have to download and install Voice and Video plug-in. Google is also offering free calls to U. S. nationals to the U. S. and Canada till the year.

The users in the US will be able to call to U. K., France, Germany, China, Japan and other countries at call rates as low as two cents per minute directly from their Gmail interface.

Gmail already features voice and video chat that allows users to chat with each other however this feature will also allow external calls. Experts were expecting a service of this kind from the company since it acquired a VoIP company Gizmo 5 last year.

Robin Schriebman, a software engineer at Google, wrote on the company's blog, "Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer's microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time."

We've been testing this feature internally and have found it to be useful in a lot of situations, ranging from making a quick call to a restaurant, to placing a call when you're in an area with bad reception," the post added.

The blog also stated that the numbers of Google Voice account holders will be displayed as outbound caller ID while it isn't necessary to have a Google Voice number to use the new VoIP feature in Google Talk. The users and users will also be able to receive and answer inbound calls after following a few steps. The new feature is not available for the users of Google Apps but is expected to be rolled out soon.
