New reports have sated that suicide is the biggest cause of death in adults aged under-44 and the deaths caused by suicides are more than deaths caused by road accidents, heart disease, or cancer.
According to new figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), every year about 2000 Australians kill themselves and according to experts most of those deaths can be prevented.
With about 65,000 people consider suicide each year, as per the ABS estimates, the official statistics may be just the tip of the iceberg.
Apart from those who die by committing suicide, people who are affected by such suicides, like family and friends are left behind to keep thinking that what made their loved one take such a drastic step.
Alan Woodward general manager of Lifeline and a board member of Suicide Prevention Australia said that suicide remains one of the great taboos in our society.
Earlier this year a report by Senate was released that urged for a major overhaul in the area. This included that more awareness about suicides was needed to be spread and helping those who were at risk was needed.
Experts also said that more attention was needed to be paid to those people who were seriously thinking of committing a suicide the moment they showed some sign of the thought.
Woodward said, "Don't think they will get over it, or it's just a passing phase."
