FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg on Sunday stated that safety standards were not met at farms by companies that recalled half a billion eggs following a salmonella outbreak.
Hamburg added, "There's no question these farms involved in the recall were not operating with the standards of practice we consider responsible.”
She further added that the salmonella outbreak had sickened about 1000 people and this has been traced by federal regulators to two Iowa egg producers.
One of the two companies held responsible for this stated that the happening had devastated it as they found a connection between their products and salmonella.
About 170 million eggs were being recalled by Hillandale Farms of Iowa. Another Iowa producer, Wright County Egg, was recalling 380 million eggs following eggs being linked to salmonella by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
Hillandale Farms, one of the largest U. S. producers, said, "We are devastated that our eggs have been implicated in making people sick. We have never had a product recall in our 45-year history, and it flies in the face of our mission to provide wholesome, nutritious food for the American public."
