A new study has stated that men who have brothers suffering from prostate cancer have more chances of being diagnosed with the cancer as compared to men who have bothers who are not suffering from the disease.
A data from 22,511 brothers of 13,975 prostate cancer patients was analyzed by Swedish researchers and it was found that brothers of prostate cancer sufferers were more prone to be diagnosed with the same disease.
The chances of developing this disease were even higher in men who had two bothers suffering from prostate cancer.
It was noted that early-stage disease was often seen in brothers of prostate cancer patients. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test is used for diagnosing this stage of prostate cancer.
It was also noted after prostate cancer patients’ diagnosis, their bothers’ chances of being diagnosed with the same disease was the highest during the first year.
Dr. Ola Bratt, of the urology department at the Helsinborg Hospital in Sweden, and colleagues said, “The increased diagnostic activity among men with a family history of prostate cancer, which we observed, will inflate family history as a risk factor for prostate cancer in populations of men who commonly receive PSA testing.”
