‘St. Vincent's Hospital under the clutches of mismanagement’

‘St. Vincent's Hospital under the clutches of mismanagement’Citing a $278,000 golf outing and more than $100 million in unspecified spending for just one year, a lawsuit that was filed on Monday alleged that the now-defunct St. Vincent's Hospital was destroyed by mismanagement being at the edge of bankruptcy.

The lawsuit filed in Manhattan state Supreme Court on behalf of former hospital staffers and community members stated that at the debt-ridden, 160-year-old Greenwich Village institution, top executives earned $1 million each, while for management consultants about $17 million was spent.

According to reports, citing a debt topping $1 billion dollars, before closing in April, the city's last Catholic-affiliated hospital filed for bankruptcy.

There was a reduction in the number of beds also about a decade ago as they had come down to 400 from 800.

On the other hand, the health care system anchored by St. Vincent's, Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers, issued a statement saying that the lawsuit was not seen by its officials but it was stated that there appears to be a blatant distortion of the facts seeing the news reports.

Attorney Yetta Kurland said, "The closure of St. Vincent's raises many questions. This is not the way a hospital trying to save itself would be acting."
