The World Health Organization believes that the H1N1 pandemic which the gripped the globe last year is over. WHO director general Margaret Chan said that the world is no longer in an influenza pandemic alert and is moving into the post-pandemic period.
As per the global health data, the new H1N1 virus has largely got over but in India the statistics suggest something else. According to some experts the pandemic has now started peaking in India.
A look at the new statistics supports this belief. In the first week of August alone the number of new cases confirmed has been recorded as 942. As a result of which a total of 83 deaths have been reported in the same period.
The states that are worst hit by the virus are Maharashtra which recorded 400 positive cases and 51 deaths. Second is Karnataka with 200 reported cases and 12 deaths. Andhra Pradesh follows next with 105 positive cases and 6 deaths. The national capital also recorded 106 cases with no deaths.
India has recorded nearly 37,000 H1N1 infections and 1,833 deaths since May 2009.
