South Dakota man dies after surgery

South Dakota man dies after surgeryA South Dakota man's death after donating a part of his liver to his brother has made a Colorado hospital temporarily suspend live donor liver transplants. An investigation is underway into the death.

According to the United Network of Organ Sharing if it is ruled during the investigation that the death happened due to the procedure then this would be Colorado's first live donor liver transplant death and the fourth in the whole country.

In 1997, first successful live donor liver transplant was done by the University of Colorado Hospital. It still is continuing other transplants. But a hospital spokeswoman said that the death of 34-year-old Ryan Arnold of Watertown, S. D., is taking a step back from live donor liver transplants.

Spokeswoman Erika Matich said, "If there's something that needs to be corrected, we will correct it." Until now about 141 successful live donor liver transplants have been conducted by the hospital.

On August 2, Arnold died after he donated a part of his liver to his brother Chad Arnold. This was four days after the surgery. Chad was readmitted to a hospital to aid his recovery.

Rod Arnold said, "I think overall his attitude is to make his life count."
