Swimmers warned about high bacteria levels

BacteriaSummer is there and so are bacteria and sharks.

Swimmers going to South Boston’s Carson Beach were warned about high bacteria levels. But people who wanted to do some sun soaking did despite the warnings.

North End resident Lindsey Fox, 22, said, “I think about the other waters I swam in, like in Thailand, and I think, ‘This isn’t bad.”

A colleague, Laura Caughey, 23, of the Back Bay stated that she did not care and she will be fine soon.

Wendy Fox, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation said that even at Tenean Beach in Dorchester and Wollaston Beach in Quincy, beach goers were warned of high levels of bacteria yesterday.

Apart from them, there were nine additional Quincy beaches, as well as South Shore beaches in Hingham, Scituate, Marshfield and Duxbury, where high bacteria levels were posted yesterday and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said that they remained closed to swimming.

Today again all beaches will be tested.

Patrick McDonald of West Roxbury said, “I don’t think it’s that bad. It’s just people are hearing the news and it’s scaring them.”

But warnings came from health officials that severe problems can be caused by swimming in polluted water like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, and respiratory problems.
