Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that a re-elected Labor government will make welfare payments conditional for parents on their children undergoing compulsory health checks.
Children would be checked regularly when it comes to their eyesight and hearing to ensure that kids are growing up normally so that they can achieve their best at school.
Gillard said while campaigning at Pakenham in the marginal Victorian seat of La Trobe on Wednesda, "A re-elected Gillard government will tie the provision of the annual supplement in family tax benefit for welfare families to having the appropriate health check for four-year-old children."
Healthy Kids Check program will fund the checks. Early detection of lifestyle risk factors, delayed development and illness is promoted by the program.
Apart from this the program also introduces guidance for healthy lifestyles and early intervention strategies.
Gillard added that children who belong from low-income households benefit from good quality education and this program would further initiate an early detection of any developmental barriers, if any, through timely check-ups.
An income support payment is received by parents of about 50,000 children aged four.
