Doctor who helped patient kill self allowed to practice

Doctor who helped patient kill self allowed to practiceA Scottish GP had helped a patient end her life by prescribing sleeping pills. There were restrictions imposed on the doctor but has been declared fit to practise medicine.

The General Medical Council had imposed restrictions on Dr Iain Kerr and yesterday all restrictions imposed were removed with immediate effect.

“You have always been a good and conscientious doctor,” the panel hearing the case told him.

For showing their support for Dr Kerr, hundreds of patients turned up. They all were delighted with the decision. In 2008 Dr Kerr was suspended whose surgery is based in Clarkston, East Renfrewshire. He was suspended after it was heard by the GMC that he had given a retired businesswoman sodium amytal tablets to help kill herself.

The doctor said that he will not help anyone coming to him asking for help in committing a suicide.

Dr Roger Hardman, who has been supervising his practise, told the panel, “I found him to be nothing other than professional in his dealings with patients. He has shown in his prescribing that he has taken on board issues that we have addressed."
