Whitehead honored for creating a ‘pure water filtration bottle’An Industrial designer Timothy Whitehead has been honored with the James Dyson U. K. national award for the ‘Pure water filtration bottle’ that he was developed.

The Pure Water Bottle cleans the impure water in just two minutes using an UV bulb. Mr. Whitehead took notice of the present techniques using chlorine and iodine tablets to clean the water while he was traveling in Zambia.

The chlorine and iodine tablets takes much longer 30 minutes to clean the water and still leave a nasty taste in the water. Thus, he tried to use the UV technology to quickly clean the water.

He developed a prototype with two chamber and plunger which was capable of removing particles even as small as four microns from the impure water. The UV bulb, powered by wind-up, then further sterilizes the water in 90 seconds.

A test on the water purified by the bottle showed that it was able clear 99.9 percent of the bacteria that are found in water. The invention has been applauded in the UK and will face against the other finalists for the international recognition in October.

Timothy Whitehead is a graduate from Loughborough University in the UK.
