Cecile Schiller of Los Angeles is taking calcium supplements because her doctor has asked her to not because she is having a serious bone problem.

Schiller said, "I take them because he tells me to. I love him and I listen to what he tells me."

The same advice is being followed by millions of Americans but these findings have raised some serious concerns that how safe are these supplements.

About 11 studies on calcium supplements was analyzed by an international team that involved 12,000 patients. They observed that there can be a 30 per cent increase in the risk of heart attack by taking calcium supplements.

Cardiologist Dr. Norman Lepor said, "This study generates the issue of whether taking calcium supplements can actually have an adverse effect."

It was stated by researchers that calcium deposits in the arteries can take place by these supplements which in turn could lead to heart disease.
