If you are a teenager and surf the Internet too often then you might develop depression. According to a new study, Internet overuse can result in other psychiatric problems apart from depression.
In about 1,041 teenagers in China, the use of Internet and then their mental health problems were studied by researchers in Australia and China. There were no reported anxiety and depression when the study started among the participants.
Moderately pathological users of the Internet were about 62 teenagers and two were had severe urges to surf the Internet.
Evaluation of depression and anxiety was done again after nine months and it was found that 87 teenagers had developed depression and anxiety symptoms were found in about eight.
There are 2.5 times more chances of developing depression among teens who use the Internet pathologically.
Authors stated, "This result suggests that young people who are initially free of mental health problems but use the Internet pathologically could develop depression as a consequence. Early intervention and prevention that targets at-risk groups with identified risk factors is effective in reducing the burden of depression among young people."
