Health officials troubled by rise in obesity rates

Health officials troubled by rise in obesity ratesAccording to health officials, the obesity rates are now higher by 30 percent or more in nine states last year in comparison to just three states in the year 2007. Americans are, therefore, increasingly becoming obese by the day.

As per the digits in the rise in obesity 2.4 million more people have added to the obesity list from the year 2007 to 2009 which makes their total to 72.5 million, or 26.7 percent of the total population. These figures are a part of the steadily rising trend.

These figures might even be underestimated since they are based on a survey conducted over the phone which included 400,000 participants who were questioned about their height and weight directly instead of being measured accurately by someone else. The figures are therefore not accurate because people have a tendency to portray a lighter and taller form of them.

Dr Thomas Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, "Over the past several decades, obesity has increased faster than anyone could have imagined it would". He added that the number of obese adults have doubled and tripled in children in the last few decades.
