Sprint to upgrade HTC EVO 4G with Android 2.2

HTC EVO2Telecom service provider, Sprint has announced on its website Thursday night that the HTC EVO 4G will be upgraded with Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Tuesday, August 3.

The carrier said that the upgrade will be made available in waves and all the users are expected to be upgraded by the middle of the month. The EVO users will receive a notification when the upgrade becomes available. Once the user receives the notification about the upgrade it will be sent to the device and will install automatically.

The users also have the option to manually download the upgrade anytime after Tuesday. The users will have to select the "HTC Software Update" option in the "System Updates" that is part of the main menu settings in order to get the update.

The indications about the upgrade surfaced after a tech blog published a leaked Sprint memo. The memo published by Engadget has not been verified but it shows dates which are similar to the officially announced plans.

The new upgrade is to include changes specific to the device and also the shift to Android 2.2. The upgrade is to offer new home screen widgets, a "flashlight mode" for the phone's camera flash and enhanced video recording capabilities, according to Engadget.

The company claims that it is "the first wireless carrier to bring Android 2.2 to customers." However some may point out that technically Google's Nexus One phone was already upgraded to Froyo last month. The Evo will be the first ddevice to get the upgrade from a carrier.

Other devices that are expected to upgrade to Froyo soon include Motorola Droid, Droid X and Droid Incredible.
