It has been found by academics at Auckland and Aberdeen universities that calcium pills can actually increase the risk of heart attacks in women after reviewing 11 studies that covered about 12,000 people.
Older women often take calcium supplements for treating osteoporosis.
According to scientists this can also lead to hardened arteries by increasing serum calcium levels in the blood.
The authors stated, "Serum calcium levels have been positively associated with an increased incidence of heart attack in large observational studies."
It was also stated by experts that there might a lot of heart attacks being caused due to so many people taking these supplements or at least this would be leading to a slightly higher risk.
But they also said that taking calcium in diet might not be having the same effect as supplements do.
They added, "Ingestion of equivalent doses of calcium from dairy products has a much smaller effect than calcium supplements on serum calcium levels."
It was stated that it was important to think before taking calcium supplements for yourself.
It was further added by researchers that, "Given the modest benefits of calcium supplements on bone density and fracture prevention, a reassessment of the role of calcium supplements in the management of osteoporosis is warranted."
