Last week at the AIDS conference it was stated that the infection rate in women can be put down by a vaginal gel called microbicide as it could actually prevent women from getting the virus. Though the success rate was 39 per cent but the success rate was seen more at some places like South Africa.
There have been earlier tests on microbicides but they could not yield anything significant which made people applaud scientists this invention at the conference.
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a top AIDS expert in the United States government, which paid most of the trial’s costs, “There’s a certain feeling of ease and pleasure for me as a scientist that any way you slice the data, it’s statistically significant.”
The positive aspect of the gel was that women were protected against genital herpes also though experts could not figure out why but it is believed that because the gel contained tenofovir, an antiviral drug, and AIDS and herpes are both viral.
Dr. Kevin A. Fenton, director of the AIDS division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, “The one-two AIDS-and-herpes punch could make it more attractive to American women.”
