India may see 1,000 MW of solar power soon

India may see 1,000 MW of solar power soonLooking at the growing demand for power in India, more and more importance has been given to the alternative sources. And one of the major one in this respect is solar energy.

Keeping that in mind the Indian minister for new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah and minister for power Sushil Kumar Shinde, came together to unveil the guidelines for selection of solar power projects under the 1,000 megawatt (MW) solar power scheme.

It is the first phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

Now one can expect that India will soon see projects worth 1,000 MW. The government is also planning to generate 1,300 MW of solar power in the first phase of mission by 2013. This will have 1,000 MW of large grid, 100 MW of small grid and around 200 MW of off-grid power generation.

If that happens, then India will become a part of the League of Nations like Germany, Spain and Japan, who have used solar energy.

It is expected that NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) is going to take the immediate steps in bringing expression of interest, invite applications and select eligible candidates under the new policy.
