Spray drive to fight West Nile virus on Monday night

Nile-VirusThe town Board of Health stated that in Winthrop, West Nile virus has been detected and following this attempts are being made to eradicate mosquitoes by conducting a town-wide spraying on Monday night.

The city streets will be sweeped on Monday night by the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control District from 10 p.m. to midnight. People are being urged to keep windows closed while the spray drive is on and also to keep pets indoors.

As Nassau County Department of Health announced isolation of West Nile virus (WNV) from seven additional mosquito pools in Nassau County, the total number of pools positive for West Nile virus in Nassau County has reached 14.

No positive pools in the Garden city have been detected, latest reports state. In this region till now only one person has been tested positive.

Intensifying efforts to battle the mosquitoes have been announced by the Nassau County Departments of Health and Public Works, and this will be done after breeding sites are inspected and if needed larvicide will also be applied.

About 42 traps situated across the county will get inspected. More attention will be given to communities where positive mosquito pools had been traced.
