Now party workers of the Shiv Sena will visit construction sites to guarantee that migrant labourers infected by malaria are being treated. They would also look into the matter that builders are keeping a check on safety of these labourers.
In Mumbai alone 2,500 construction sites exist and those that have taken steps to keep mosquitoes at bay comprise only two per cent.
From August 1, the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will issue health cards to over three lakh labourers. The corporation will also conduct blood test every 15 days of labourers to ensure that they are off mosquitoe-related diseases.
Reports have stated that the main carriers of such diseases are labourers from Chattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
BMC executive health officer Dr GT Ambe said, "If the mosquitoes bite those afflicted by the disease first and then bite others, then the disease can be transmitted. We will check the labourers' health, blood and treat them in case they fall ill."
According to Sena leaders, on the directions of executive president Uddhav Thackeray, health check-up camps will be organised.
